Exercise First!
Walking your dog reduces the emotional stress of owner separation by natural physical activity. Our walks - about 40 minutes duration on private bush trails (170 acres with 150 feet of elevation change) . Our morning and afternoon walks are in addition to their playtimes. I walk only 2 dogs at a time so we can practice no pull walking and manners along the way. and no just following an internal combustion engine. Walk means walk.!
So many behavioral issues could be avoided with adequate exercise. So many health issues in the dog's life avoided with adequate exercise. When someone new to my kennel says of my 2 hour a day exercise program- "He doesn't get that much exercise at home- he doesn't need that much exercise"...I am gobsmacked. I haven't met a dog yet- large or small- Great Dane to Miniature Dashund- who doesn't love the walks and wouldn't keep going after their time was up. True, some older dogs prefer a slower pace, but unless their veterinarian mandates a limitation- they are mentally and physically primed for their exercise time and more contented afterwards, especially with the stress of being away from home .
We practice no-pull leash walks, sit, down, stay, waiting at the door before leaving the kennel.
